Behind the Story

Where did the green banana story start? It started with an insight from an oncologist and grew into something more, inspiring our filmmakers to tell the story of Jiichan and Hina.

This holiday season, we’re finding more ways to turn hope into health, which is why we’re spotlighting the incredible work from Every Cure—a global nonprofit organization on a mission to save and improve people’s lives by repurposing drugs.

Through AI technology, the team at Every Cure can scan knowledge of all drugs and diseases to identify the best drug-repurposing opportunities, proving that anything is possible in health when we change the way we look at it.

Every detail of “The Gift of Green Bananas” was carefully considered to honor the Japanese American heritage of Sarah Kambe Holland, the film’s writer and director. While the story is fictional, authenticity was a priority every step of the way, from scriptwriting to set design to casting and production. The set for Jiichan’s house was decorated with heirlooms from Sarah’s family, including antique wall hangings and photos passed down from her grandparents.

At its core, “The Gift of Green Bananas” is a multigenerational story about the relationship between a Japanese grandfather and his American granddaughter. After an extensive casting search in Los Angeles, we found Hidetoshi Imura and Hana Kurihara to bring Jiichan and Hina to life. Alongside these talented actors, our team was able to further develop the familial dynamic between Jiichan and Hina, especially the gesture of gifting fruit as an expression of love. Cast and crew connected to this story, and it shows. The majority of our crew were of Asian descent to stay true to our commitment to representation.
